Would you be surprised to learn that a LOT of our Halloween decorations are DIY’s? Ha! Didn’t think so! As we transform our home into a haunted house for Halloween this year, we decided to share some of our simple and inexpensive DIY decoration ideas. These decorations are ones you can put together very quickly and on the cheap! These are also fun projects the kiddos can help with. Bonus — once created, they’re good for many Halloweens to come!
Get to work. Halloween is almost here!!
Halloween DIY #1 – Monster House
Teeth – Using a piece of 3/4″ rigid insulation left over from the attic renovation, we decided to turn our home into a terrifying monster house. We simply cut out big teeth forms and then used 4 colors of spray paint (red, white, black, and tan-ish) to give the teeth the gnarly, haunted look.
Lastly, we use 3″ screws to attach each section under the porch roof. This is such an easy project that will transform your house in a matter of minutes. Since these are so durable, you can use them year after year. Just pull them out of storage and tack them up. Done!
Eyeballs – We have dormer windows in our attic, so we also added some “eyeballs” to complete our monster face theme. The eyeballs are just cardboard cut to fit the window and a light behind it. Easy peasy!
Halloween DIY #2 – Spooky Spider
Okay, this spider looks a little sad in the daylight, but oh how she shines and scares after dark. To create this incredibly huge/scary spider, we stuffed a garbage bag with plastic grocery bags and attached foam pipe insulation (for copper pipes) to create the legs. We like to hang a couple of these spiders from the eves of the house or perch them over gutters with huge rope-webs. At night, under a full moon, it’s as if their webs are consuming the entire house.
To give them movement and a living presence, we aim a strobe light in their direction, and the garbage bags appear to have glistening and slimy textures.
Halloween DIY #3 – Creepy Coffin
We had some 3/4″ plywood and chalkboard paint left over from one of our projects so we decide to create a small coffin. This may look complicated, but it’s just blunt cuts (nothing fancy) and screws holding the pieces together.
We usually place the coffin next to the front door, half-open with a skeleton arm or leg hanging out. The coffin is a great place to put a portable speaker. It gives Halloween music a hollow, spooky sound.
Jolie helps remove the nails from the coffin. In the off-season, we use the coffin to store extra bones, skulls, spiders, webs, and the howling Wolfman!
And, as dog lovers, we can’t forget about the thoroughly emaciated spooky dog. He’s ready to get out of the coffin and start scaring the neighborhood kids.
See – spooky dog found his friends!
Halloween DIY #4 – Snake Wreath
First, we took an inexpensive wooden, branchy wreath and added some plastic snakes. Then, we spray-painted the entire wreath black. Done!
Halloween DIY #4 – Reno Semi-Pros costume
Inspired by a classic Will Ferrell movie, Melissa made this for me this year. The jersey was painted with fabric paint and accessories from Amazon. LOL Hopefully, it’s not too cold!
Have fun! Be safe! Happy Halloween!!!
